What’s the Difference?

Hand-knotting is a type of construction technique used to build and weave the carpet. There are other techniques as well, like:

  1. Hand-Tufted: Hand-tufted rugs look very similar to hand-knotted rugs, but they do not hold a value similar to hand-knotted ones. They are made using a tool called a tufting gun, which speeds up the process.
  2. Power-Loomed: The power-loomed rugs are machine-made. Since they are mass-produced, there is a uniformity in design, which takes away the essence that makes rugs unique and different. They are made using synthetic fibers and don’t have the same longevity or character as handmade options.

To distinguish between hand-tufted and hand-knotted rugs, check the rug’s thickness. Hand-tufted ones will be thicker than hand-knotted ones because the former has a higher pile, and the latter will be flatter and uneven.

Hand-Knotted Rugs: A Beautiful Blend of Artistry and Patience

There’s a reason why hand-knotted rugs are so highly valued. The art behind the handwoven rugs lies in the meticulous craftsmanship, time, and skill that go into each piece. The process of handwoven rugs involves tying each knot by hand, and this requires skill and precision. The more knots per square inch, the more intricated and detailed the design, and the higher the price.

It can take months, and sometimes even years, to complete a single rug as skilled hands work knot by knot, weaving time, tradition, and artistry into every inch. The level of detail and time invested by artisans adds to the price.

How to Care for Hand-Knotted Rugs?

Investing in a hand-knotted rug can add a timeless touch to your room’s decor. However, they are a delicacy and require maintenance to retain that exquisite charm:

  • After a very few months, rotate the rug to 90 degrees to increase the longevity of the beautiful heirloom.
  • Rotation ensures that the wear is evenly distributed, especially if one corner or area of the rug is exposed more to the sunlight or receives traffic.
  • The hand-knotted rug is more exposed to shedding, so let it shed for a couple of months, and it will stop shedding after months.
  • If there is any food or drink spillage, act fast. Use a clean, dry cloth to blot the stain, and do not rub. Use club soda and a white towel to soak up the spill, and always work from edge to center.
  • Use a vacuum only with suction to clean the rug regularly. Avoid using a vacuum with powerful suction because it will damage the rug.
